Thor Halvorssen’s Unique Way of Fighting Against the Abuse of Human Rights

For a long time, human rights activists have been perceived as individuals who just sit in their comfortable offices and talk about human rights. Thor Halvorssen is one man that is striving to change the stereotype associated with human rights activists like himself. As such, Halvorssen is a hands-on person who displays vigor in his endeavors to champion for human rights where they have been abused through totalitarian leadership.

Unlike many other activists, Thor Halvorssen has witnessed first-hand the dangers associated with human rights violation as well as dictatorial leadership. His father was tortured inside a prison in Caracas for shedding light on the corrupt practices in the Venezuelan government. In addition, his mother was also a victim of shooting during an anti-Chavez demonstration.

Well aware of the consequences of dictatorship, Thor Halvorssen and his team of activists at the Human Rights Foundation have devoted their energy to fighting against authoritarianism. He has displayed a strong commitment to helping defectors and dissidents in fighting against tyranny. His support for rebels is displayed by the people he has hired over the years to act as chairperson of HRF such as Garry Kasparov, a Russian political activist.

Of Ethics and Activists

If there is one thing that needs to be addressed, it is ethics. A lot of people are acting in unethical ways towards others. Among the common sources of unethical practices are rulers of countries. There are rulers that deal with their own country in a way that limits if not denies human rights. Fortunately, there are people that are looking for ways to address the tyranny in oppressive countries. They are human rights activists. These days, more people are revealing how oppressive their society is. Then there are human rights activists like Thor Halvorssen that are trying to fight for a more humane world.

Thor Halvorssen is considered a trouble maker for Tyrants, and the new face of human rights activism. For one thing, he is changing the stereotype of human rights activists. Often times, they are seen as the gloomy types that love humanity and yet hate people. Thor Halvorssen is presenting a different picture of a happier activist that has a deep love for people. He is also working intensely on helping out the oppressed. While he does have an intensity about him, he is also willing to work with people in order to come to an agreement.

While many other human rights activists seem to talk about the issues in front of the camera and not much else, Thor Halvorssen is known to actually get dirty and even take some blows for the oppressed. There were times when he was used as a punching bag. He takes that as all part of the job. When he started the Human Rights Foundation, Thor has adopted the motto to not just talk about human rights, but to get dirty and take action. After all, it is called Human Rights Activism for a reason. Thor Halvorssen believes in being active.

The Man Who Troubles Dictators

Thor Halvorssen is under 40 years of age, yet he is already recognized for the organization he has established back in 2005, known as the Human Rights Foundation (HRF). Half Norwegian and half Venezuelan, Thor comes from distinguished family.

His grandfather was a Norwegian consul in Venezuela acting on behalf of the king, while his mother descends from the first Venezuelan president, Cristóbal Mendoza as well as the famous historical figure Simón “The Liberator” Bolívar.

According to The Atlantic, the family also went through their own suffering from the hands of dictators. Thor’s father was previously tortured at Venezuela prison, while his mom was shot at a demonstration against Hugo Chavez, a man who not only had violated human rights, but also started wasting Venezuela’s resources to the point where the country is now facing an economic collapse.

Thor Halvorssen is an outspoken critic of leftist Latin American dictatorships and receives donations from conservative sources. He even claimed that Socialism can lead to violations of the human rights.

The Human Rights Foundation focuses on violations of human rights with a focus on closed societies. Their mission is to “ensure that freedom is both preserved and promoted around the world.” One of the ways they’re doing it is by exposing how dictators seek to improve their images by using celebrities, PR firms, and charitable foundations.
The HRF has already exposed Nicki Minaj’s ties to Angola and Jennifer Lopez’s stay in Turkmenistan. So were Kanye West’s dealings in Kazakhstan. Often, such celebrities perform for dictators for large sums of money. And the HRF is on the watch.
